Winter Driving Essay When you have to compare and contrast driving in the winter and driving in the summer there are many things that come to my mind. In the summer time there is no visual distractions. It is most comfortable to drive in the summer with your windows down. For the most part summer driving is safe then winter driving. I personally despise driving in the winter. In the summer time I have visibility. During the winter months it gets darker earlier. During the summer months we have more sunlight through out the day. I love when the sun is out longer. Although driving in the winter is much more scenic with snow on branches, deer on the side of the roads and snowmen that kids made. The scenic view for summer driving is filled with blooming flowers, birds flying, colorful trees and the Long Island sound filled with boats, as I drive down by the shore. I like to take the most scenic routes as I drive in the summer. The visibility in the winter is very poor, if you have to drive in a blizzard. In the summer I barely have a problem with visibility.I like to see clear when I drive. In the summer time it is most comfortable. In the winter time I get too cold when I have my window open. I love to drive around with my windows wide open listening to music. I like to smoke in my car with the window open. Winter driving causes me major anxiety. I am worry free in the summer. I like to feel free when I drive. I feel summer driving is when its safest to drive. In the winter you have to worry about slipping and not gripping to the pavement. My tires have full grip on the asphalt in the summer time. I like having traction when I drive. You have to be more alert driving in the winter time with the cars behind you, around you and in front of you,It takes more time to stop. You also have to be alert in the summer, but when you hit your brakes you will come to a complete stop on the dry road. I do not like when my brakes lock up when I tap them in the snow. Most importantly, is the amount of kids that are out that you have to watch out for.An example is kids sleighing down hills into roadways that are not paying attention to the cars. In conclusion summer driving is more forgiving than winter driving. Weather conditions in the winter can render roadways very dangerous, requiring increased driver skill. I enjoy driving but preferably in the summer. In the winter I would not be a good candidate as a designated driver. The Porter’s Five Forces is a powerful and simple tool for understanding where the power lies in a business situation. Conventionally, the tool is used to identify whether new products, services or businesses have the potential to be profitable. However it can be very illuminating when used to understand the balance of power in other situations. When Machiavelli originally wrote The Prince at the end of 1513 and perhaps early 1514, it had been written quickly by an author who was, among other things, seeking to regain his status in the Florentine government. Since many of his colleagues in the republican government had been quickly rehabilitated and returned to service under the Medici’s, Machiavelli felt that he needed a fair advantage in order to regain his previous post. It was originally written for presentation to Giuliano de'Medici, who might have actually appreciated it. But the dedication was changed when Giulianos died and it was then rededicated to Lorenzo de'Medici who probably did not read it when it came into his hands in 1516. Then in 1515-16, when he wrote the Discourses (a much longer process) it was probably the result of many discussions he might previously have had with scholars knowledgeable in political theory. In any event, when looking at these two books it becomes evident that the Prince wa s meant for an audience who wouldn’t take it completely seriously but would look to it as a satirical reminder of what could be; and then with the Discourses, of how it should be done. Machiavelli's political treatise, The Prince, has previously been seen as a departure from traditional thinking of the time. Machiavelli wanted a new theory that was free of stagnate ideals and ethical codes. The way he described government was as if it were a practical, efficient machine that made its own rules to fit the situation at hand instead of abiding by laws, morals, or culturally created traditions. Every political thinker before Machiavelli treated the use of power as a means to an end; their only differences lying in what they considered that end to be and how far... ...when connected to the Discourses; it is a way for a sovereign to compare the ideal and the reality of his/her sovereignty. Since the Prince seems to be on the extreme yet ideal end of the governmental spectrum, a sovereign (with the right amount of intelligence) could rightfully look to The Prince as an end and The Discourses as a means to that end. In effect, both books have created a full coherent philosophy, just not from outside appearances. But with a little more introspection, a coherent line of thought begins to appear. [10] Globalization effect to the Indian women: Globalization has had negative implications for Indian women.According to estimates from World Development Indicators, â€Å"Women work two-thirds of the world’s working hours, produce half of the world’s food, but earn only ten percent of the world’s income, and own less than one percent of the world’s property. †[11] In India most of the women work two full time jobs. One in a factory where they are paid almost nothing, the  other is in home where they are paid nothing. One example of women’s labor being exploited would be the Noida Export Processing Zone, which is 24 km from  New Delhi. These â€Å"zones† prefer to hire women because they are more docile and more productive in men.In short they are easier to control and less likely to retaliate against less than ideal working conditions, which are exactly what thousand s of women encounter 12 hours a day. The zone is dangerous, hot, and unsanitary. Unnecessary body searches are routine. There are no maternity benefits and minimum wage is never enforced. Women who become pregnant or marry are immediately fired. Overtime is compulsory but women are paid lower rates than men. In order to avoid being fired, women turn to unsafe abortions performed by unqualified â€Å"doctors. I. Type of Story In my opinion The Pearl is a very interesting novel in the way that the book is written and the problems that are so realistically portrayed. The author chooses a poor Indian Village as the setting for his story, probably to show that it really doesn’t matter where one lives, since greed exists all over the world. Kino, the main character, finds a huge pearl that is supposedly worth a lot of money. His attitude toward his friends and family doesn’t change but the attitude of everyone else does in that they suddenly becomes his friend and wants something from him. Their feeling is that they deserve their share, and they will play every trick in the book to get what they want. The sad thing is that even the doctor, who is supposed to be a caregiver, first rejects Kino but agrees to see him once he hears of the pearl. I feel that the story is well written in that if the reader looks over the fact that the story takes place in a distant land, we can find many similari ties between the theme in the story and our everyday lives. II. Characterizations The person who takes the role of the protagonist in The Pearl is Kino. He is the caretaker of the family and he would do anything to safeguard his family. For instance, when he finds the pearl the only thing that he thinks of is what he could procure for his family and how the money could effect their lives. He imagined that he could afford to let his son go to school and get an education and so he could make a better living for himself and not always be concerned about making ends meet or how to make money for a living. He imagined his wife Juana decked out in new clothes and wearing jewelry, and he imagined getting married but this time in a real church with all their family, as well a real priest. One morning, calamity strikes when a scorpion stings Coyotito. Hoping to protect their son, Kino and Juana rush him to the doctor in town. When they arrive at the doctor’s gate, they are turned away because they are poor natives who cannot pay enough. Later that same morning, Kino and Juana take their family canoe, an heirloom, out to the estuary to go diving for pearls. Kino lets out a triumphant yell at his good fortune, prompting the surrounding boats to circle in and examine the treasure. In the afternoon, the whole neighborhood gathers at Kino’s brush house to celebrate his find. Kino names a list of things that he will secure for his family with his newfound wealth, including a church wedding and an education for his son. The neighbors marvel at Kino’s boldness and wonder if he is foolish or wise to harbor such ambitions. Toward evening, the local priest visits Kino to bless him in his good fortune and to remind him of his place within the church. Shortly thereafter, the doctor arrives, explaining that he was out in the morning but has come now to cure Coyotito. He administers a powdered capsule and promises to return in an hour. In the intervening period, Coyotito grows violently ill, and Kino decides to bury the pearl under the floor in a corner of the brush house. The doctor returns and feeds Coyotito a potion to quiet his spasms.
